Satina Zajkowski Blog Diary

7/09/2015
In class we went over the assignment in the lecture. We did an exercise with the Simpsons using some of the characters as a target audience. Our group chose to do the Beach Clean-up Day and used Homer as our target. We chose our pairs, and then chose our topic. Emma and I decided to stick with the Beach Clean-up Day. My reasons for this was, with summer coming up, its going to be a big issue. It will also be really good for getting some amazing photos of the beach. I already have some shots we could use too, some from Tauranga and Oriental bay.

After class we did a mind map of the beach and all things we could relate to it and pollution. We also got down 10 initial thumbnails. These were just of the ideas that came to us from what we had in the mind map. We set up a blog address. We also discussed whether we should be doing illustration/vector or photography. I am more drawn to Photography for its realism, and I think its a more effective way of portraying the beauty of the beach or the shock of pollution. Photography does have its limitations though, especially as most of the Wellington beach pollution seems to be bacterial or under the surface of the water. We will have to do more research into this though.

When I got home I did some research into superimposing illustrations into photographs. We could have the best of both worlds. If we use Photography to depict the picturesque views, and superimpose illustrated rubbish we can convey that the rubbish doesn't belong. I also researched some existing beach clean-up posters and polluted beach images.

In class had a lecture on mood boards. we also shared designs and research with other groups and did a quick a3 poster targeted to Lisa Simpson. I also shared my random ideas to target gamers. "Join the fight against dystopia". I definitely found the Simpsons exercise very helpful.

9/09 - 13/09/2015
I have created an A3 mood board for beach symbols and another for beach activities, also a colour picked palette from the photos used. I found all of the photo I have previously taken of beaches and seals. Unfortunately I have lost all my fish pictures from Napier aquarium. I also did some thumbnails using some of the stronger metaphors I found in my earlier research. (plastic bag surrender flag, the grunge glove picking itself up, and the life preserver. I did some more research into style to develop 4 rendered images for class on monday.

14/09/2015
In class we looked at each others images, came up with a list of all items/themes/people relating to the beach. We did some quick thumbnails combining 2 random items from the list. This did spark a few very random and interesting images and themes. I think our strongest ones were the lifeguard resuscitating the seal, the shark becoming vulnerable by placing waterwings on him and the seagull pooing on the sunbather. We chose to develop the shark and the seagull further. I also did some new thumbnails and development on the surrender, the Game and dystopia ideas. 4 a3 development drawings for tuesday.

In class we had a lecture on looking at existing presidences and styles. We got feedback on a few of our concepts from our group, and on the surrender sandcastle from the whole class. Gray suggested that we could use pac-man eating all the rubbish to further our gamer idea. We also decided that our strongest themes are Dystopia and Gamer for development.

16/09 - 20/09/2015
Our digital workbook was a real mess and we were starting to get behind on it. We have tidied that up, as well as started some more developments on our ideas. We did some puns using famous game titles. I did some research into game interfaces and the scenery of a few games. Looked at some gamer movie posters and some video game posters. Made a list of famous game titles and a few descriptions to try and get some ideas going off the "pacman rubbish eater" idea of Grays. Did some font research. Made some more mood boards. Took photos at oriental bay. Did a few renderings.

We got feedback on our rendered concepts. This was really helpful. I learnt that I have missed out crucial information by being a returned student. We never learnt anything about grids and layouts or font types when i did my first year and a half. These things were the things I failed on in ihi/wehi, so I need to do some research into these. We also looked at website wireframing. Websites is another thing we never learnt in the old curriculum.
after class we looked at the nz opera website, 350.org and searched for a 3rd website to analyse. We found a website called getbeagle.co by google searching innovative webdesign. we looked at a few other sites too but thought this one had some really unique features. I also made some more mood boards with some of the images I had been looking at to inform my renders, and some new images to help develop the concept further.

Todays class was really productive. We had a lecture in the morning on transmedia. We got some more feedback on our posters, and some direction. Being reminded to use negative space has informed a whole lot of new concepts for me. I kept looking at it more like a photographic composition than a poster. Having grid explained also helped too so i can apply that to further concepts. We also had a brief tutorial on Invision.
I did some more research on using controllers as a symbol for gamers. This generated a few more concepts.

23/09 - 27/09/2015
I rendered several of the new concepts so we can see what's working. We really need to nail down a style. I went looking for some more designer looking fonts to try out with the new renders. I signed up for invision. Also did some reading and watched some youtube videos on typography and grid. I tried applying a grid of 3rds and 5ths to my controller in the sand design. I had used the grid method where each elements edges created a line, liked Gray showed me, but I wanted to see how these two systems compared.

28/09/2015
Lecture for next years subjects. Talked to Gray about new renders. did more renders. Website Wireframe.

29/09 - 4/10/2015
Discussed new renders with Lee and Gray and chose one to move forward with. sorted out the text for flyer. found some pixel images for reference. Got the details for the game sort. found some fonts and added them to a doc to show Emma. Made the poster and ID card. chose some possible fonts for body text. gave Emma some feedback and ideas for the website, and all the pieces from the poster to use on website.

5/10/2015
Discussed our transmedia campaign with classmates, Lee and Gray. Got lots of feedback. Sketched some more poster designs. Came up with a new homepage for website. Gave Emma some more feedback and some ideas for website. lots of poster render iterations. changed the typeface on flyer.

6/10/2015
Had a lecture on colour, file types and what each program is good for. scanned lots of examples of grid. got feedback on new poster. mocked up a new flyer design.

7/10/2015 - 11/10/2015
made changes to the poster. wrote a blurb. had to send the poster to Emma for her to put the character on. photoshoped the flyer and all the pixeled images for it. got a lanyard for the ID card. changed the ID card to fit with poster and website. Made an achievement rewards sign for by the barbecue at the event.

12/10/2015
feedback on flyer, achievement tiers sign and ID Card. Made final decisions on the ID and changes to the flyer text colours with Emma. we also made a mock-up of the ID and tested the flyer folding. I took some photos of the ID card being worn and re-pixeled the hook/fishing line on the flyer. the barb was the wrong way and it was hard to tell it was fishing line. i also did the context image for the rewards sign
13/10/2015
we got our final bits sorted. rationale, sticking the flyer together, sticking the rewards sign on card and had a look at everyones work. did peer review
